Amazon Prime picks for October, 2019

Amazon Prime Picks

As many of you know, I am a fan of Amazon Prime video selections. Each month they publish their upcoming video selection on their site, but what is worth seeing?

Here’s a list of my picks for the month:

Two (count ’em) seasons of Costume Quest are currently available on Prime. Now, I have not watched this animated kid’s series for Halloween, but with Shudder grabbing up most of the good horror material on Amazon…there is actually little Halloween on the streamer for October. I have not yet watched any of it, but it has pretty decent reviews so I’m putting this out there for me to watch, too. After all, I’ve seen the Great Pumpkin skip Linus enough over the years. Not sure I could take it again.

Speaking of stuff I intend to watch but haven’t yet, Jungle stars Daniel Radcliffe and the well named Thomas Kretschmann in a chiller set…guess where? Ratcliffe has been picking some interesting projects as of late and Thomas Kretschmann (again, great name) has picked a lot of good genre fare. This one is based on a true story and pits man against nature and nature appears to be pretty ticked off. May be worth a look.

Returning to Prime, Patriot Games is the best Jack Ryan film in my opinion. Harrison Ford picks up the role here with a wonderful villain turn by the House of Stark’s Sean Bean. There is incredibly well done suspense, particularly in the final scenes, along with great action sequences to help you viscerally feel the peril of our hero. Amazon is releasing Season Two of its own popular Jack Ryan program soon, so I’m sure this is intended to make you hunger for that…but what’s wrong with that? Enjoy the morsel!

Now I’m going to piss some people off. I saw that Nobody’s Fool (2018) is coming out on Prime October 28. This Tyler Perry film (who I believe is contractually obligated to put out one movie for every five weeks) starring Tiffany Haddish got predominantly good reviews and is going on my wishlist, but I wasn’t willing to shell out to see it in the theaters. But I’m not going to talk about that…

Releasing October 28.

I want to talk about 1994’s Paul Newman vehicle Nobody’s Fool. He got an Oscar nod for his work here, and it wasn’t a pity vote. In this comedy/drama, the other old Blue Eyes plays an irresponsible man in a small town where everyone knows everyone…but he doesn’t know his own grandson. Costarring Melanie Griffith (without a tiger in sight), Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Jessica Tandy it sounds like one of those Oscar bait type films that watches like you are eating your vegetables. But somehow, it turns out to be a great film with some moments guaranteed to extract some tears. It’s available right now and is a perfect way to enter the Christmas season…which is a holiday Amazon actually has some films for.
