Amazon Prime picks for August, 2019

Amazon Prime Picks
Amazon Prime Picks

As many of you know, I am a fan of Amazon Prime video selections. Each month they publish their upcoming video selection on their site, but what is worth seeing?

Here’s a list of my picks for the month:

If you are one of those unfortunates that put down cash to see the new Hellboy in the theater, truly I feel your pain. Particularly when one of Guillermo del Toro’s original Hellboy films is free on Amazon starting August 31! Hellboy II: The Golden Army is not my favorite of GdT’s two Hellboys since there is no self-winding clockwork Nazi in this one, but I still find this one a fun watch. Get it? Watch? Oh, man. I’m on fire.

I, Frankenstein was made in 2014 and stars Aaron Eckhart. This is the last nice thing I can say about this movie. Never see it. It is terrible. I saw it for one reason: Yvonne Strahovski is hot. The rest of this movie…not so much. AVOID! You have been warned.

Now, let’s talk about some I haven’t seen, but I’m interested in. Carnival Row is an Amazon Original. The trailer looks like a mix of steampunk and fairy tales with a good dose of violence. Looks like a fun mix…if the story lives up to the visuals. Let’s hope this series has a better bit of script than just design…Good Omens was a huge disappointment for me for this precise issue.

It hits PRIME at the end of the month.

For my final pick, (though I remind you not to watch I, Frankenstein once again…so not a pick) I go to a movie you probably have at least heard of: Poltergeist II: The Other Side. Now, you might wonder why I bring up such a well known title. Generally, I try to guide you towards something I’m afraid you may miss.

That’s exactly why I’m pointing it out. This flick is always going to be outshone by the original film and frankly, for good reason. This is a retread. No question. But it is still a better ghost movie than most of the junk out there on PRIME. It’s free on August 31. Watch it for Reverend Kane and a H.R. Giger designed Vomit Monster if nothing else!
