Shangri-La Plaza: Television Musical Pilot from 1990

Glancing Back

Found this gem on YT today. This was 1990 when one of my favorite short TV series (Cop Rock) actually made it to series. There was something in the air and another musical (Hull High) made it to series but this one never got past a pilot (Shangri-La Plaza). I think the only musicals that ever really made it was Glee and Nashville, but I may be wrong.

This one is interesting, too, since it has some interesting talent behind it. It was directed by Nick Castle (who was the original “Shape” in Halloween) and he even wrote “Escape from New York.” Fright Night’s Chris Sarandon, who went on to be in Princess Bride, and had won an Academy Award is in here as well. The Office’s Melora Hardin has a key role as well as Critters’ Terence Mann (a multiple Tony award winner himself.) I remember watching this back when it was on TV because the concept was so novel. Neat to see it again after all these years.
